Ces interrupteurs à flotteur fonctionnent comme un interrupteur d'éclairage standard; ils ouvrent et ferment des contacts pour contrôler le passage du courant de signal. Lorsqu'ils sont fermés, le courant circule et lorsqu'ils sont ouverts, le courant ne circule pas. L'état « normal » correspond au moment où l'interrupteur à flotteur est en position basse, reposant sur son câble ou sa butée de flotteur. Certains interrupteurs à flotteur intègrent une hystérésis qui empêche la pompe de brouter, en l'éteignant à un niveau et en ne l'allumant qu'à un autre niveau. Les flotteurs peuvent comporter jusqu'à quatre points de commutation dans un seul flotteur. De nombreux interrupteurs à flotteur sont simplement utilisés pour l'indication de niveau.

These float switches work like a standard light switch, they open and close contacts to control whether or not signal current can pass through. When they are closed, the current is flowing and when they are open, the current is not flowing. The "normal" state is when the float switch is down, resting on it's cable or float stop. Some float switches have hysteresis built-in which tells the pump not to chatter, but to turn off at one level, and turn on only at another level. The floats have multiple up to four switch points in a single float. Many float switches are simply used for level indication.
