The functioning of the sensor entails the transmission of light through a chamber containing the sample. In order to isolate and identify the specific wavelength of infrared (IR) absorbed by the gas, an optical filter is positioned in front of the detector. The measurement of the gas concentration is determined by the extent of absorption at a particular wavelength. When the detector receives a greater amount of this wavelength, the reading is lower, indicating a higher quantity of the gas. Conversely, a higher reading is obtained when less light reaches the sensor.
